Latham Served Bankruptcy Papers at Races
Former MP faces potential bankruptcy after defamation ruling.
The Brief
- Latham served with bankruptcy papers during a horse race event.
- Bankruptcy stems from a defamation lawsuit over a 2023 Twitter post.
- Latham faces over $500,000 in legal costs and damages.
Mark Latham, former NSW One Nation leader, was served with bankruptcy papers while attending the Golden Eagle racing event at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
The notice follows a defamation lawsuit by independent MP Alex Greenwich, who won a court case against Latham over a 2023 Twitter post described as 'vile' and 'homophobic'.
Latham declined to comment when approached by a News Corp journalist, calling the reporter a 'nosy dickhead'.
The Federal Court upheld the original ruling that Latham’s post defamed Greenwich, and Latham now faces approximately $180,000 in damages and interest, with legal costs pushing the total to over $500,000.
Greenwich stated that Latham has refused to take responsibility for his actions and has pursued legal appeals instead of apologizing.
Latham has 21 days to pay the debt or apply for bankruptcy. If declared bankrupt, his parliamentary seat could be vacated under NSW law.
