The Brief

  • Committee warns UK's stance on China risks national security.
  • Report calls for stricter rules on trade and data sharing with China.
  • Government defends its approach as balanced and strategic.

A cross-party committee of MPs has found that the Labour government's approach to China prioritizes diplomatic politeness over national security, according to a new report.

The Business, Innovation, Science and Trade Committee warned that the government's stance on China has put the UK's security at risk, urging the blocking of sensitive information sharing and stricter rules for businesses dealing with Chinese firms.

The committee recommended a traffic-light system for trade relations, restricting matters related to resilience and defence from China, while also calling for clearer guidance for sectors like AI and semiconductors.

MPs also called for a ban on imports made using forced labour, criticizing current prohibitions as inadequate. Liam Byrne, chair of the committee, criticized the government for lacking clarity and consistency in its China policy.

The report highlighted the risks of dependence on Chinese technology, including potential for remote control of devices and data exfiltration to Chinese servers. It also criticized the government for failing to create a register of high, risk jurisdictions.

The government defended its approach, stating it has placed UK-China relations on a more stable, long-term footing. Officials cited a manifesto commitment to a long-term, strategic approach to managing the relationship with China.
