Ricky Kwok, 38, has spoken publicly for the first time about the deaths of his parents, Fuk-Fu Joseph Kwok and Mei Han Chong, who were found dead in their Auckland home three years ago. He believes the system failed to protect them.
Kwok's parents were last seen in Hamilton on November 6, 2023, when they were supposed to meet him for lunch to celebrate his father's birthday. They were expected to return to Auckland before a family trip to Hong Kong. However, they never arrived.
Kwok, a vascular surgeon, decided to drive to his parents' home in Ellerslie after his messages and calls went unanswered. Upon arrival, he found the house dark and his father dead, with his mother missing. His mother's body was later found in a bush on the North Shore.
A police review found that personal information was shared in a way that may have contributed to the crime. The review noted that there were gaps in the handling of personal information, but it did not specify the exact nature of the disclosure.
Kwok expressed disappointment with the system for failing to protect his parents and hopes for accountability and meaningful changes to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
