The Brief

  • Kohli needs 75 runs to surpass Ricky Ponting as top run-scorer against New Zealand.
  • A 50+ run innings could make him the highest scorer in ODI chases against the Kiwis.
  • Kohli needs 12 more runs to reach 13,000 ODI runs as a No.3 batter.

The India vs New Zealand 5-match ODI series is set to begin on November 4 and conclude on November 15. During this series, Virat Kohli will aim to set multiple records.

Currently, Ricky Ponting holds the record for the most runs scored against New Zealand in ODI format with 1971 runs. Kohli has accumulated 1897 runs in 36 innings, requiring 75 more to surpass Ponting.

Kohli also has the chance to claim the record for the most runs scored in ODI chases against New Zealand. To achieve this, he needs to score 54 runs while chasing a target.

A single 50+ run innings could position Kohli as the player with the most fifty-plus scores against South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia. If this innings leads to a win, he will also hold the record for the most ODI 50+ scores in winning matches.

Kohli is just 12 runs away from reaching 13,000 ODI runs, which would make him the highest run-scorer in the No.3 batting position. Additionally, scoring at least 179 runs in the series would make him the leading run-scorer against New Zealand in ODI history.

A century in the series would also grant Kohli multiple records, including the highest individual score against New Zealand in ODI cricket.
