Kellogg's alters Rice Krispies and Coco Pops recipes in the UK due to supply issues, but US versions remain unchanged.

The Brief

  • UK Rice Krispies and Coco Pops now use rice flour and corn flour instead of whole rice grains.
  • US and Canadian Rice Krispies, Coco Pops, and Frosted Krispies retain original rice-based recipes.
  • New UK recipes include wheat gluten, affecting allergy-sensitive consumers.

Kellogg's has modified the recipe for its Rice Krispies and Coco Pops cereals in the United Kingdom, replacing whole rice grains with a mix of rice flour and corn flour. This change is attributed to weather-related disruptions impacting ingredient supplies.

Kellanova, the company managing Kellogg's cereal brands outside North America, confirmed the reformulation. The changes do not apply to Rice Krispies and Coco Pops sold in the United States or Canada, according to WK Kellogg Co.

The updated UK recipes also include wheat gluten, making the cereals unsuitable for individuals with wheat allergies or celiac disease. Kellanova stated the reformulation aims to maintain product quality amid fluctuating grain availability and quality.

Kellogg's US and Canadian cereal lines, including Rice Krispies and Coco Pops, continue to use real rice without any changes to their ingredients or recipes. WK Kellogg Co. confirmed this, noting no impact from the UK recipe adjustments.

Other cereal manufacturers, such as General Mills, have also been updating their recipes. General Mills announced in August that its U.S. cereals, including Lucky Charms and Trix, no longer contain certified synthetic colors.

Kellanova did not immediately respond to requests for comment from FOX Business.
