JetBlue raises bag fees for third time in a year
JetBlue increases checked bag fees to offset rising fuel costs.
The Brief
- Checked bag fees now range from $50 to $70 depending on timing and travel period.
- JetBlue cites rising fuel and operating costs as reason for fee increase.
- Other airlines often follow similar fee adjustments after JetBlue's changes.
JetBlue Airways has raised the price of checking a bag for many customers for the third time in less than a year. The change follows a rise in fuel costs that have significantly impacted the airline industry.
For economy class passengers, the first checked bag will cost $50 if purchased more than 24 hours before departure during a non-peak travel period. The fee increases to $60 if paid within 24 hours of departure.
During peak travel times, such as holidays or summer, the first checked bag will cost $55 if booked more than 24 hours in advance, and $70 if paid within 24 hours of departure.
Exceptions to the fee include customers with a co-branded JetBlue credit card or elite frequent flyer status. JetBlue stated the fee increase is to help offset rising fuel and operating costs.
Jet fuel prices have more than doubled this year, with costs reaching $4.44 per gallon in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. This has led to increased expenses for airlines, impacting ticket prices.
Other major U.S. airlines have previously raised fees following JetBlue's adjustments, indicating a trend in the industry to manage rising operational costs.
