Israel's President Begins Coalition Talks Amid Political Deadlock
President Herzog starts consultations to form next government as no party secures majority.
The Brief
- President Herzog began talks with political parties to form Israel's next government.
- Neither Netanyahu nor Eisenkot secured majority seats in the recent election.
- Arab-led parties may play key role in determining the next leader.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog initiated coalition talks with political leaders following last week's parliamentary election, which resulted in a hung parliament. No single party secured the 61 seats needed for a majority in the 120-member Knesset.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ruling coalition won 53 seats, while opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot's bloc secured 48. Arab-led parties Ra'am and the Joint List together won a record 19 seats, potentially giving them significant influence in government formation.
Herzog has urged political factions to compromise, warning that not every commitment and promise can be fulfilled if Israel is to avoid another election. His consultations include discussions with various parties to determine which leader has the best chance of assembling a coalition.
Eisenkot's prospects improved after Ra'am announced it would recommend him, raising his expected support to 56 lawmakers. The Joint List, which holds 11 seats, has not yet formally announced its position, which could push Eisenkot past the majority threshold.
Netanyahu's allies face challenges in securing enough backing, with the Degel HaTorah faction indicating it will not recommend either candidate. Consultations are set to continue on Thursday, with several key parties still to meet Herzog.
The president will select the nominee for government formation, who will have 28 days to assemble a coalition, with a possible 14-day extension. If unsuccessful, Israel may face another election early next year.
