India to launch GPS alternative satellite
ISRO plans to boost NavIC with new satellite launch.
The Brief
- NVS-03 satellite will be launched by GSLV-F18 rocket from Sriharikota.
- The satellite aims to enhance India's indigenous navigation system, NavIC.
- ISRO stated the satellite will support navigation services across India and beyond.
India's space agency, ISRO, is set to launch the NVS-03 satellite to strengthen its indigenous navigation system, NavIC. The satellite will be carried into orbit by the GSLV-F18 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
According to ISRO, the NVS-03 is intended to augment the NavIC constellation and support the continuity of navigation services. The satellite is part of ISRO's next-generation navigation series and will be launched at 11:51 p.m. on Friday.
The NVS-03 satellite features an indigenous atomic clock alongside imported clocks and adds the L1 signal to the existing L5 and S-band signals. It is designed to provide navigation coverage across India and up to 1,500 kilometers beyond its borders.
NavIC, India's indigenous alternative to the US-owned GPS system, was developed to reduce the country's reliance on foreign navigation systems. However, the program has faced repeated setbacks, including issues with atomic clocks and satellite launch and deployment problems.
