India's Permanent Mission to the UN, through Counsellor Soumya Nair, supported a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly calling for an end to the US embargo on Cuba.
The resolution, adopted by a vote of 130 in favor, 17 against, and 25 abstentions, urges all states to repeal laws and measures with extraterritorial effects that hinder Cuba's sovereignty and development.
Nair stated that India's commitment to multilateralism is based on the belief that international issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy in line with the UN Charter.
She reiterated the UN General Assembly's repeated calls for the embargo's end, emphasizing the need for an environment that allows Cuba to fully engage in international cooperation and development.
Citing a UN Secretary-General report, Nair noted the embargo's impact on Cuba's economy, including a 60 percent shortage of essential medicines and a 50 percent decline in food production over the past five years.
The resolution underscores the UN's stance that the embargo undermines Cuba's ability to achieve its development goals and maintain its sovereignty.
