The Brief

  • India faces risks to energy supplies and trade due to instability in Hormuz and Red Sea.
  • India could enhance maritime security through cooperation with Gulf states and Israel.
  • Analysis suggests India can act as mediator in Gaza and regional security talks.

India's energy and trade interests are at risk due to growing instability in key maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Red, according to an analysis by Irina Tsukerman.

Threats to shipping in these areas could force rerouting of vessels around Africa, increasing costs and delays for Indian exporters, the analysis said.

India could strengthen maritime security by sharing intelligence with Saudi Arabia and the UAE, coordinating naval escorts and deploying surveillance aircraft to monitor suspicious activity.

Existing naval presence in the western Indian Ocean and continued ties with Iran could help protect Indian commercial interests, the analysis noted.

India's relationships with Israel, Gulf states and European partners could allow it to act as an intermediary in regional security discussions, including those related to Gaza.

The analysis calls for India to prioritize maritime security, pursue infrastructure projects with Gulf states and use diplomatic ties to encourage realistic commitments on Gaza reconstruction.
