The Brief

  • India supports UN resolution to end US embargo on Cuba, citing sovereignty concerns.
  • Resolution passed with 130 votes, 17 against, 25 abstentions.
  • Cuba's healthcare and food sectors have been significantly impacted by the embargo.

India joined 129 other countries in backing a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for an end to the US trade embargo on Cuba. The resolution received 130 votes in favor, with 17 countries opposing and 25 abstaining.

Soumya Nair, a counsellor at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, stated that New Delhi supports the Assembly’s appeal to reject laws with extraterritorial effects that harm the sovereignty of other nations.

Nair emphasized that India reiterates the Assembly’s call for all states to refrain from promulgating and applying laws that conflict with UN Charter obligations and international law.

India’s commitment to multilateralism was highlighted, with Nair expressing hope that the embargo will be lifted to enable Cuba to participate more fully in international cooperation and development.

The resolution also noted that Cuba’s healthcare system faces shortages of over 60% of essential medicines, while food production has declined by more than 50% over the past five years.

Tensions at the UN escalated as Cuba’s Foreign Minister confronted US representatives during a speech, leading to a temporary suspension of proceedings by the Assembly President.

The US expelled a Cuban diplomat over alleged physical contact with an American official, with the US representative warning of consequences for any attacks on US diplomats.

The UN expressed concern over the incident, urging all delegations to maintain decorum and follow established procedures during Assembly sessions.

The US has enforced a trade embargo on Cuba since 1960, with restrictions affecting trade and economic engagement across multiple sectors. The embargo has drawn repeated international criticism, including UN votes against it since 1992.
