IAF chief names LCA Mk-1A top priority
New IAF chief highlights urgent need for fighter aircraft modernization.
The Brief
- LCA Mk-1A induction is IAF chief's immediate priority.
- IAF aims to maintain combat squadron numbers above 30.
- New aircraft will replace retired MiG-21s.
Air Chief Marshal R. K. Dixit assumed command of the Indian Air Force on Saturday, succeeding Air Chief Marshal AP Singh. Dixit, an experimental test pilot and qualified flying instructor, outlined his vision for the IAF’s future using the acronym 'VAYU'.
Dixit emphasized the need for vigilance and combat readiness, stating that every squadron, radar, and air defense unit must be prepared to respond immediately. His primary focus is restoring the IAF’s combat strength to its sanctioned level.
The IAF is relying on the timely induction of new aircraft, including the LCA Mk-1A and 114 additional Rafales, to maintain its fighter fleet. This is necessary to ensure combat squadron numbers do not fall below 30 against a sanctioned strength of 42.5.
Dixit highlighted the importance of innovation in doctrine, procedures, and technology, including networked, AI-enabled command and control, layered counter-drone defense, and the use of near-space as an operational domain. He also stressed the need for integrated military efforts across the armed forces.
The LCA Mk-1A is nearing induction into the IAF after missing several deadlines. It will be the first aircraft to enter service under Dixit’s leadership by year-end. The LCA Mk-1A will replace the retired MiG-21s, which served for over six decades.
The IAF has placed two orders with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for 180 Mk-1A fighter jets worth a combined ₹1.1 lakh crore. Dixit also aims to accelerate the LCA Mk-2 and AMCA programs, as China has deployed its J-20 and J-35 stealth fighters.
