- The U.S. granted Bolsonaro and his family visas days before their departure.
- Bolsonaro faces corruption and money laundering charges in Brazil.
Flávio Bolsonaro, Brazil’s defeated presidential candidate, departed the country for Argentina and then Ecuador with his wife and two daughters, according to Argentina’s migration authority. The family crossed into Argentina via the Tancredo Neves International Bridge on Tuesday night.
The Argentine migration authority confirmed that Bolsonaro and his family had valid travel documents and faced no legal issues entering the country. They then boarded a private charter flight operated by Baires Fly S.A. for Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Flight tracking data indicated the aircraft departed Guayaquil shortly after midnight for Miami’s Opa Locka executive airport. It remains unclear whether Bolsonaro was aboard the plane.
Brazil’s newly reelected president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, stated that Bolsonaro had left the country and expressed regret over the decision, calling it 'shameful.' Lula claimed he did not have exact details about Bolsonaro’s whereabouts.
A close ally of Bolsonaro, Paulo Figueiredo, stated he cannot confirm information from foreign authorities, but added 'Flávio Bolsonaro is well, in security and resting with his family.' A press conference is scheduled for Thursday in Miami.
Brazil’s Supreme Court is investigating Bolsonaro for corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion in two cases. The court had ordered him to surrender his passports, but it remained unclear whether he had complied. The investigation includes allegations of using a sports betting company to launder funds from government pensions paid to senior citizens.
