Brazilian son of former president flees to U.S., faces corruption investigations
The Brief
- Flavio Bolsonaro departed Brazil and arrived in the U.S. via Argentina and Ecuador.
- U.S. officials confirmed the family passed immigration checks and were cleared.
- Brazilian authorities stated Bolsonaro is not officially classified as a fugitive.
Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, adjusted his phrasing, characterising himself as the ‘leader’ rather than the ‘president’.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a statement noting that members of the Bolsonaro family underwent inspection and received clearance in accordance with applicable immigration laws and procedures.
Bolsonaro left Brazil amid ongoing inquiries relating to suspected corruption and money laundering offences. Instructions had been issued for him to surrender his passports; nevertheless, he departed the country regardless.
Law enforcement authorities in Brazil released a bulletin on Wednesday clarifying that Bolsonaro is not formally classified as a fugitive.
