Ferrari Secures Pole Position at Mexico City GP
Lewis Hamilton's pole position marks Ferrari's first single-lap triumph of 2026.
The Brief
- Hamilton set a 1m 16.513s lap, securing his 105th career pole.
- Ferrari's first pole of the year came after a tense final qualifying session.
- Hamilton narrowly beat Mercedes' George Russell by 0.009s.
Team Principal Fred Vasseur praised Lewis Hamilton's performance in qualifying for the Mexico City Grand Prix, calling it 'a fantastic job' that marked the squad's first triumph over a single lap in 2026.
Hamilton's final lap of 1m 16.513s was notable for several achievements, including his 105th career pole, his first Grand Prix pole for Ferrari, and his first at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez since 2015.
Despite Ferrari's strong performance throughout the weekend, Mercedes, Red Bull, and McLaren were all in contention for the top spot in qualifying. A lock-up by Max Verstappen allowed Hamilton to hold onto the lead by a margin of 0.009s over Mercedes' George Russell.
Vasseur acknowledged the difficulty of the session, stating, 'It’s a good one for Lewis, a good one for the team as it’s also our first pole position this year.' He noted that Ferrari had struggled more in qualifying than in races at the start of the season but were happy with their position of 1-3 on the grid.
Vasseur highlighted tyre management as a key factor in Hamilton's success, saying, 'I think it’s a lot about tyre management – to be able to keep the tyres for the last couple of corners where you can make a huge difference in terms of lap time, and to not cook everything before Turn 12.'
