DOJ Subpoenas LA Election Workers Over Voter Roll Review
Federal prosecutors demand testimony from California election officials amid legal disputes over voter eligibility.
The Brief
- DOJ issued grand jury subpoenas to LA County Registrar-Recorder employees.
- Federal judge rejects DOJ request to set aside ballots for 20,000 voters flagged as 'likely' noncitizens.
- Judge warns DOJ to stop threats against election workers.
The Department of Justice issued grand jury subpoenas to employees of the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder's office, according to an official confirmation received by NPR.
The subpoenas, which require employees to appear in court on November 4, follow prior DOJ communications warning election officials of potential legal consequences for non-cooperation.
A federal judge in California recently rejected the DOJ's request to set aside ballots for 20,000 voters listed as 'likely' noncitizens, citing a lack of legal basis and concerns about voter disenfranchisement.
The judge also ordered the DOJ to stop any threats against election workers, emphasizing that such actions must cease immediately.
Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder Dean Logan praised the judge's warning, stating that the DOJ has adopted an adversarial approach and that election officials are following both state and federal law.
The DOJ has appealed the judge's ruling to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, while officials have not commented on the recent subpoenas.
