Djokovic wins Paris Masters, sets record
Novak Djokovic, 39, becomes oldest Paris Masters champion, advances to round two.
The Brief
- Djokovic defeats Valentin Vacherot 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 in first round.
- He becomes oldest winner in tournament history at 39.
- Djokovic faces Rinky Hijikata in round two, de Minaur plays Etcheverry.
Novak Djokovic advanced to the second round of the Paris Masters after a victory over Valentin Vacherot. The 24-time grand slam champion won 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 6-1 in the first round on Tuesday.
Djokovic, who is 39 years old, set a new record as the oldest winner in the tournament's history. He had to save three break points in the second set to prevent Vacherot from serving for the match before securing the win.
Djokovic's victory strengthened his 10th position, just one behind Alex de Minaur, in the live Race to Turn standings as both players jostle to be among the eight qualifiers for the ATP Finals.
Djokovic will next face Rinky Hijikata, de Minaur's Davis Cup teammate, in round two. Hijikata, who has won three matches — two in qualifying and one first-round win — without dropping a set, could pose a challenge.
De Minaur must first defeat Tomas Martin Etcheverry, a potential hurdle for the Australian. Etcheverry, the world No.31, beat Andrey Rublev in the first round.
The competition for the ATP Finals remains tight, with Taylor Fritz also winning on Tuesday against Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi.
