The Brief

  • Patrick Dever moved from fourth to third place after Kenya’s Albert Korir tested positive for CERA and was banned for five years.
  • Peres Jepchirchir faces suspension after testing positive for EPO ahead of Sydney Marathon.
  • Dathan Ritzenhein highlights the reputational damage of doping cases on athletes.

Three days before the 2026 New York City Marathon, British runner Patrick Dever received official recognition for a podium finish. His result was adjusted after Kenya’s Albert Korir tested positive for CERA and was banned for five years.

Korir’s disqualification moved Dever from fourth to third place in the 2025 race. Dever received additional prize money and a retroactive bonus from his sponsor, Puma, but admitted the financial gain could not replace the experience of celebrating on race day.

Dever acknowledged the anti-doping system’s effectiveness in catching cheaters but expressed frustration at being promoted to the podium after the fact. He noted that no one remembers a runner who is not on the podium at the time of the race.

Peres Jepchirchir, a Kenyan marathon star, faces suspension after testing positive for EPO. Her recent victories, including the 2024 London Marathon and 2025 World Championships, are now under scrutiny. The Athletics Integrity Unit announced her provisional suspension on October 23.

Dathan Ritzenhein, a retired American Olympic marathoner, emphasized the lasting impact of doping cases on an athlete’s reputation. He said one positive test can overshadow years of success and erase an athlete’s legacy.

Jepchirchir’s suspension may also affect other runners who competed against her in major races, as they could potentially be moved up in rankings if her results are disqualified.
