Democrats Rally Behind El-Sayed Amid Trump Attacks
Progressive candidate faces intense GOP criticism as party leaders offer cautious support.
The Brief
- Democrats are increasingly backing Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan's Senate race.
- Trump and Republicans have launched Islamophobic attacks against El-Sayed.
- Polls show El-Sayed leads Republican Mike Rogers by a narrow margin.
Facing a barrage of extreme attacks from Donald Trump and his allies, the Democratic establishment is finally rallying behind progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan's Senate race. However, the support remains cautious and often omits his name directly.
Trump and his allies have repeatedly attacked El-Sayed, falsely labeling him a 'jihadist' and 'Muslim Brotherhood member' while invoking 9/11. Republicans have also doubled down on incendiary ads using his full name, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed.
Despite the attacks, prominent Democrats have lined up to support El-Sayed. Senator Bernie Sanders and former President Barack Obama have publicly endorsed him, while Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has also joined his campaign efforts.
El-Sayed, a former Detroit health official, is running on a platform that includes Medicare for All, ending corporate influence in politics, and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He has also called for ending U.S. military aid to Israel and condemning the war in Gaza as genocide.
Recent polls show El-Sayed leading Republican Mike Rogers by a narrow margin, with a Marist poll placing him at 50% and Rogers at 48% among likely voters. However, El-Sayed has trailed in ad spending, and the race remains tight.
While some Democratic leaders have endorsed El-Sayed, others have expressed reservations, particularly regarding his stance on Israel. Senator Chuck Schumer and former Congressman Sander Levin have both endorsed him despite significant disagreements on the issue.
