The Brief

  • Enumeration phase spans 45 days, longer than previous census periods.
  • 40 questions include caste, Aadhaar, and voter ID details.
  • Manipur and some states will not conduct census due to scheduling conflicts.

The population enumeration phase for Census 2027 will run from January 10 to February 28, a duration longer than previous census exercises. This includes a self-enumeration window from January 10 to 24.

The census schedule for poll-bound states such as Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Punjab will span 35 days, according to sources.

The extended duration is attributed to the increased number of questions in Phase-2, which includes 40 topics compared to 29 in 2011. These questions cover caste, spouse's name, and personal identifiers like Aadhaar and voter ID.

A notification from the Union home ministry states that the census will be conducted nationwide except in Manipur, where it has been put on hold. The state's census was paused due to demands for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process to be completed first.

The census will take place from January 25 to February 27, 2027, in states and union territories where it was postponed. This includes areas like Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir, where the census has already been completed.

A revisional round will be held from March 1 to 5, 2027, following the reference date of March 1, 2027. The new fields include details such as nationality, permanent address, and vaccination records.
