Canelo Wins WBC Title in Riyadh
Canelo Alvarez claims super middleweight title with unanimous decision over Mbilli.
The Brief
- Canelo returns from 13-month layoff to win WBC title.
- Mbilli's strategy backfires as he abandons pressure style.
- Referee deducts point from Mbilli in round eight.
Canelo Alvarez secured the WBC super middleweight title with a unanimous decision over Christian Mbilli in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The result came after a 12-round bout where Canelo maintained control throughout.
Mbilli, the defending champion, struggled to adapt to the bright lights and abandoned his usual aggressive tactics. Instead, he attempted to box with Canelo, a shift that officials said hindered his performance.
The most controversial moment occurred in round eight when Canelo, with the referee's approval, deducted a point from Mbilli for illegal shots. This decision shifted the round's score and increased Canelo's lead on the judges' cards.
Despite brief moments of success, including a clean right hand in round six, Mbilli failed to capitalize. A clean uppercut from Canelo in round seven staggered the champion, who recovered but never mounted sustained pressure.
The undercard saw Jaime Munguia survive a close sixth-round battle to defeat Nikita Zon by unanimous decision. The fight was part of the same card as the main event between Canelo and Mbilli.
