Cambodia Cruise Passengers Stranded After Operation Suspension
Passengers on the Villa Vie Odyssey cruise were abruptly told to leave after the company suspended operations due to rising fuel costs.
The Brief
- Villa Vie Residences suspended operations in Cambodia due to fuel cost increases.
- Over 200 passengers had rented or purchased cabins on the cruise ship.
- Passengers were given just seven hours to prepare for disembarkation.
Villa Vie Residences announced on October 27 that it was suspending operations in Cambodia due to 'extraordinary increases in fuel costs.' The decision left more than 200 passengers scrambling to figure out their next steps.
The cruise ship, Villa Vie Odyssey, had been offering a 'new way to live' with residents renting or purchasing cabins. The company claimed that monthly fuel expenses had risen from an average of $1,800 per cabin to $6,000 to $8,000 in parts of Asia due to the war in Iran.
Passengers were informed just hours before disembarkation that they had to leave the ship. Some were told at 6:30 a.m. local time that they had to be off the ship in Cambodia by 2 p.m. with their belongings.
Residents were hustled off the ship and driven to the center of Sihanoukville, Cambodia, with their luggage. They were left to find their own accommodations, with no assistance from the company.
Passengers reported that the cruise had been experiencing financial strain for months, with rising costs leading to cuts in amenities like internet, fitness classes, and laundry service. Some were also asked to contribute additional funds to keep the cruise running.
Despite the abrupt end, some passengers expressed no regret about their experience. Others, however, were frustrated by the lack of warning and the sudden disruption to their lives.
