Brunswijk scores first goal at 65 for Inter Moengotapoe
Former Suriname vice president scores in league match after fielding for his club.
The Brief
- Brunswijk converted a penalty in Inter Moengotapoe's 5-0 win over PVV.
- The 65-year-old former politician has a history of drug trafficking convictions.
- His inclusion in matches has drawn past controversy and regulatory action.
Ronnie Brunswijk, former Suriname vice president and club owner, scored his first goal in the Suriname Major League at age 65 during Inter Moengotapoe's 5-0 victory over Politie Voetbal Vrienden.
Brunswijk converted a second-half penalty after his team led 4-0, placing the ball into the right corner of the net following a penalty award.
The 65-year-old has a controversial past, including a 1999 Dutch court conviction for cocaine trafficking that he has never served due to lack of extradition ties.
Brunswijk has previously played for his club while in government, including a 2021 CONCACAF League match where his team lost 6-0 to CD Olimpia.
That match led to an investigation by CONCACAF, resulting in both clubs being expelled and Brunswijk receiving a three-year ban for alleged misconduct.
Saturday's goal marks Brunswijk's first in the Suriname Major League since its 2024 launch, which received FIFA support to modernize the domestic game.
