The Brief

  • The doctor was evacuated to the UK via a joint medical operation.
  • Treatment is taking place in a high-level isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital.
  • UK officials say the risk to the public remains low.

A British doctor who contracted Ebola while working in the Democratic Republic of Congo is being treated at the Royal Free Hospital in London. The hospital confirmed the patient is receiving care in an isolation unit.

The doctor was brought to the UK on a medical evacuation flight, a collaborative effort between the UK and DRC governments and their international health partners. He was believed to be working on an Ebola outbreak in the DRC, which has resulted in over 5,100 deaths, according to UN figures.

The Royal Free Hospital has a specialized isolation unit staffed by a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and laboratory personnel. This unit has previously treated patients with Lassa fever, Ebola, and Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever.

Access to the isolation unit is restricted, with a special tent featuring controlled ventilation allowing NHS staff to provide care. All air leaving the unit is filtered to ensure no risk to hospital staff or the public.

UK Health Security Agency officials stated that the NHS has well-established infection prevention protocols to minimize the risk of onward transmission. They emphasized that the risk to the wider public remains low.

Experts noted that while the infection of a healthcare worker is concerning, it is not unexpected given the high-risk nature of the work. They also highlighted that Ebola is not airborne and that the UK is well-prepared to manage such cases.
