Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva turned 81 on Tuesday, shortly after securing his fourth term in office. His victory in the runoff election came with 51.8% of the vote, surpassing his opponent Flavio Bolsonaro's 48.2%.
Lula, a leftist leader, has become one of the world's oldest sitting heads of state, with only U.S. President Donald Trump, who turned 80 in June, being slightly younger. In a video posted on Instagram, he vowed to deliver 'the best term any president has ever served in the history of this country.'
During his campaign, Lula addressed concerns about his age by stating he was 'fitter than ever,' often jogging at events and sharing gym workout videos on social media. His campaign also underwent a social media overhaul following his initial defeat to Flavio Bolsonaro.
Lula's Workers’ Party (PT) encouraged supporters to celebrate his birthday outside the presidential residence in Brasilia on Tuesday. In a speech after his victory, he thanked Brazil's 'rebellious youth' for their support during the campaign.
