Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, landed in Miami on Wednesday after a secretive exit that involved U.S. and Argentine allies. He arrived under humanitarian parole, which allows him to remain in the U.S. for one year.
The operation to move Bolsonaro out of Brazil began on Monday, as allies grew worried he could face arrest. The Supreme Court had ordered him to surrender his passports and stay in the country following his defeat in the presidential election.
Bolsonaro's departure was facilitated by a private jet and coordination with Trump adviser Jason Miller and his brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro. The Trump administration approved his entry, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio worked to issue visas, though the family entered under humanitarian parole.
Bolsonaro plans to set up a political operation in exile from the U.S., according to people involved in discussions with him. However, the White House has not indicated it will challenge Brazil's president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's re-election victory.
