Australia to Require Biometrics for Visa Applicants in India Starting October 26
Australia will require biometric data from Indian visa applicants starting October 26, 2026.
The Brief
- Biometric collection includes fingerprints and facial images.
- Applicants will be notified if biometrics are required and how to submit them.
- Previously submitted biometrics may allow free processing via the Immi App.
The Australian government has introduced biometric collection requirements effective October 26, 2026. These rules apply to all applicants for Australian visas in India.
The Department of Home Affairs will inform applicants if biometric data is needed and provide instructions on how to complete the process.
Applicants who have previously submitted their biometrics at an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre and possess a valid passport may be eligible to complete the process through the Australian Immi App free of charge.
The move is part of Australia's broader efforts to strengthen visa screening and maintain the integrity of its migration system, including applications from international students.
Australian authorities have assured applicants that visa processing times are not expected to be affected by the expanded requirements, provided applicants complete their biometric formalities in the given timeline.
India is the second-largest source of international students in Australia, following China. According to the latest official figures from the Australian government, 145,012 Indian students were studying in Australia in 2025.
