The Brief

  • Leah McSweeney sued Bravo and Andy Cohen, alleging they exploited her alcoholism.
  • The case became the first Bravo lawsuit to reach a courtroom in November 2024.
  • McSweeney withdrew her suit, and Bravo settled with her; the amount is undisclosed.

Leah McSweeney, a former cast member of 'Real Housewives of New York,' withdrew her lawsuit against Bravo and Andy Cohen, ending the case without a trial.

McSweeney alleged that Bravo executives and producers encouraged her to drink excessively, despite her requests to stop, and subjected her to harassment related to her alcohol use disorder.

A New York judge ruled that Bravo had a First Amendment right to require its stars to drink, but noted the network should be held accountable for the methods used to pressure McSweeney.

McSweeney claimed producers directed other cast members to bring up her mental health and substance abuse issues and called her a drug addict. She also said she was told she could not attend AA meetings while filming a show.

McSweeney, who had been sober for 10 years, relapsed before filming in 2019 and returned to sobriety before her second season. She said she suffered emotional distress during her time with the show.

Cohen denied claims that he snorted cocaine with cast members and accused McSweeney of defamation, demanding she apologize. McSweeney has not issued an apology, and Cohen has not filed a lawsuit.
