The Brief

  • American Airlines launches daily nonstop flights between Miami and Cap-Haïtien.
  • Service does not include Port-au-Prince due to FAA restrictions.
  • Inaugural crew is all-Haitian, highlighting cultural ties.

American Airlines has restarted daily nonstop flights between Miami International Airport and Cap-Haïtien International Airport, marking the first major US carrier to resume service to Haiti since US airlines suspended flights amid escalating security concerns in 2024.

The return of service comes after the FAA introduced restrictions on civil aviation operations in affected parts of Haiti, including security threats such as armed attacks on aircraft, leading to the suspension of flights to Port-au-Prince.

American Airlines operates the route with Boeing 737 aircraft, offering more than 90 onward connections across the United States through Miami, which is critical for travelers from cities like New York and Orlando.

American Airlines described Cap-Haïtien as its 100th destination in the Caribbean and Latin America network, emphasizing its regional network expansion and the importance of the northern Haiti airport as an entry point.

The FAA continues to restrict flights to Port-au-Prince, citing ongoing security concerns, and has not lifted its restrictions despite narrowing some limitations to allow service at airports outside the restricted area.

American Airlines' return to Haiti highlights the importance of Miami as a hub for international travel and underscores the significance of the route for Haitian-American communities.
