Report highlights youth enthusiasm and challenges in AI adoption across India.
The Brief
- India ranked 11th among 56 Commonwealth nations in AI potential.
- 89% of young Indians plan to use AI for education or work within a year.
- Report projects $79.1 billion GDP gain under moderate AI adoption scenario.
A report by Ayre Think Tank suggests artificial intelligence could contribute $79.1 billion to India's GDP over the next decade, positioning the country as the second-largest economic opportunity among Commonwealth nations.
The analysis highlights India's significant youth population, with 382 million people aged 15 to 29, making up more than half of the Commonwealth's total youth population of 732 million.
According to the report, 89% of young Indians plan to use AI for education or work within the next year, and over 60% are confident in managing interactions with AI tools.
India's digital infrastructure, 4G connectivity, and affordable mobile data have enhanced readiness for AI adoption. However, only about two-thirds of young people own a mobile phone, indicating access disparities despite broad network coverage.
The report also noted challenges in the labor market, with 30% of young people outside employment, education, or training, and 86% of young workers in the informal sector.
Ayre Think Tank emphasized India's efforts to build an AI-ready workforce through training initiatives and partnerships, including government programs with Intel India to equip young people with practical AI skills.
