The Brief

  • Dane died at 5, less than one year after being diagnosed with ALS.
  • Gayheart and daughters had no idea final hospital trip would be last.
  • They conducted a family sleepover in his hospital room during final week.

Rebecca Gayheart described the final days of her husband Eric Dane’s life, emphasizing that they had no idea his final hospital trip would be the last. Dane died at 53 in February, less than one year after being diagnosed with ALS.

Gayheart spoke with NBC’s Maria Shriver about Dane’s posthumous memoir, detailing how their family never anticipated losing him. She recalled how Dane had been to the hospital multiple times before, each time recovering and returning to normal life.

The first day of Dane’s final hospital trip was marked by uncertainty. Gayheart said she had no idea it would be their last week together. The same was true for their daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were unaware of the gravity of the situation.

It took a few days for the family to fully grasp the seriousness of Dane’s condition. Gayheart noted that the tone of the doctors’ conversations and the information provided shifted dramatically during this time. Dane was aware of the change and continued to communicate with his family, though not clearly.

Friends who are doctors supported Gayheart during this emotional period, which she described as causing “decision fatigue.” Dane made his own choices about his final days, remaining in control of how he wished to leave this world.

To comfort Dane in his final days, Gayheart and their daughters held a family sleepover in his hospital room. They played his favorite music, used battery-powered candles, and tried to make the environment as comforting as possible.

Gayheart admitted she was unprepared for how quickly the end came. She noted that while others may have felt prepared for the final conversations, the family had no roadmap for the journey. Dane was becoming more mentally alert but losing all physical abilities, which was difficult for their daughters to witness.
