5.7-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Central Japan, 22 Injured
A strong earthquake struck central Japan, causing injuries and prompting emergency responses.
The Brief
- Earthquake measured 5.7 on Richter scale, injuring at least 22 people.
- Tremors felt across multiple prefectures, including Aichi and Shizuoka.
- Authorities activated emergency measures and warned of possible aftershocks.
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Japan early Sunday, November 8, injuring at least 22 people and causing damage to shops. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported the tremor occurred at around 1:04 am local time, with its epicenter in western Shizuoka Prefecture at a depth of approximately 40 kilometers.
The strongest shaking was recorded in Chita city, Aichi Prefecture, where the seismic intensity reached upper 5 on Japan's seven-level scale. No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake. The USGS recorded the quake at magnitude 5.5, slightly lower than the JMA's estimate.
Japanese television footage showed damaged shop windows, broken glass, and books falling from shelves. Some injured individuals reportedly fell down stairs while attempting to exit buildings during the shaking. Authorities continued to assess the damage and respond to reports from affected areas.
The JMA warned of possible further tremors in the coming week, urging residents to remain alert for aftershocks and prepare for potential hazards like landslides and falling rocks. Officials noted no apparent changes in the Nankai Trough plate following the earthquake, though they did not link it to an increased risk of a major event.
Transport operations were affected, with Shinkansen bullet trains running at reduced speeds in affected areas as railway operators checked for infrastructure damage. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi established a liaison office to coordinate the response and assess damage, urging caution and preparedness for another similar earthquake.
Japan, located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences frequent seismic activity and maintains extensive disaster-preparedness systems. Sunday's earthquake has again highlighted the risks faced by communities in seismically active regions.
