A boat carrying 305 migrants capsized off the coast of Djibouti, resulting in at least 139 deaths, including 15 children, according to the International Organization for Migration.
Rescue efforts recovered 82 bodies by Sunday, with 52 men, 42 women, nine girls, and six boys among the deceased.
The vessel was traveling from Djibouti to Yemen when it sank on Thursday night, the IOM stated. More than 80 survivors, all Ethiopian nationals, were rescued near Guehere, north of Obock.
The IOM shared a video showing personal items, including shoes, on a beach, which likely belong to missing migrants.
Alexandre Coissac, IOM Chief of Mission in Djibouti, described the incident as a 'devastating loss of life' and a 'stark reminder' of the dangers faced by migrants.
IOM Director General Amy Pope emphasized the need for safe and legal migration pathways, urging governments and donors to act before the next boat goes down.
